Hi David:

Many times depending on the age of the device you can remove it from the
system then restart the computer to clear it. Then reinstall and see if it
is found and functioning. If your stating it is not recognizing the media
type it is possible that the registry entry for the device has been
changed.and this could have been caused by a recent program you may have
installed that changed the device settings, or you could try the unit in
another machine to see if that device is really kaput.

If that is the case, then replace the unit with a new one since they are
pretty cheap now days to purchase.

I have has similar problems
Not with a DVD but with a CD writer

Yes sometimes deleteing and re installing will solve problem
Checking in a 2nd system is a great test

You have cleaned the unit with a lens cleaner?
Especially if it is a dusty enviroment or you smoke

The laser does go up in units

You could get a boot disk and see if it reads a CD in Dos
Just to make sure it is not a windows problem
